The College of Health and Human Services at George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia offers a unique program for students pursuing a career change to nursing. The GMU nursing accelerated second bachelor’s degree program allows students to complete a second bachelor’s degree program in nursing. The intense, fast-paced program is designed to be completed in three full-time semesters (fall, spring and summer).

GMU Nursing Accelerated Program Overview

This 12 month nursing program has 47 credits to complete the 120 credit degree program. Courses will quickly advance from introductory level (nursing techniques, basic care, Pharmacology, individual and group care) during the fall semester, to advanced courses (technologies in nursing, leadership, research and professional care) in the final semester. After completing the program graduates need to pass a state examination to get their nursing license.

GMU Nursing Accelerated Program: The Application Process

Admission to the GMU nursing accelerated program is highly competitive because of the limited clinical spots available each year. The application to the university, the application for the GMU nursing accelerated program and all nursing prerequisites with an overall GPA (all undergraduate coursework) of a minimum of a 3.0 must be complete by January 15. Nursing prerequisites include courses in nursing ethics, science, psychology, statistics and nutrition.

Applicants must possess a non-nursing bachelor’s degree, have not been dismissed from another nursing program and be accepted as a matriculated student at the university. The application will also include an essay and resume. Students are accepted based on a wide range of criteria including overall grades, standardized testing results and experience.

Prior to beginning fall courses, students accepted into the GMU accelerated nursing program will need their CPR certification, completion of all required health immunizations, pass a background investigation and drug test.

The university strongly recommends that applicants apply to more than one nursing program because of the popularity and competitive nature of admissions.
