Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis offers an accelerated BSN program for those who have completed a bachelor’s degree in a non-nursing field and wish to train for the bachelor’s degree in nursing. IUPUI accelerated nursing is a 20 month full-time program of courses and clinical training that prepares students for the new roles that the future professional nurse will be expected to take. Admitted applicants who meet the basic education requirements can start the program in the fall, spring, or summer semesters.
The IUPUI Accelerated Nursing Program
The prerequisites of the IUPUI accelerated nursing program furnish a broad base from which to approach the nursing profession: sciences, communication, cultural diversity, social competency and humanistic appreciation. Once the prerequisites are met, the student enters an intense program of courses and clinical training that focus on the science, practice and technology of nursing. It is emphasized that the student must make a full-time commitment to the IUPUI accelerated nursing program in order to complete all requirements in 20 months.
Courses such as Applied Health-Care Ethics, Nursing Research, Health of the Community and Nursing Management prepare the student to assume supervisory, teaching or research roles in the profession of nursing. In line with current thinking about the future of nursing, the emphasis is on maintaining health and preventing disease rather than on illness treatment.
Clinical study under the supervision of nurse preceptors will expose the student to the different kinds of nursing care provided in hospitals and other medical settings. Graduates of the IUPUI accelerated nursing program are eligible to apply for the registered nurse license.

IUPUI has the largest nursing school in the U.S. It has been ranked number 15 in the 2011 U.S. News rankings of graduate nursing schools in the country. The School of Nursing provides a full range of degree options, including the DNP and the PhD. The graduating BSN has therefore multiple options to continue studies in one of the eight MSN specializations, or toward the doctorate.
